Understand practical information
Identify the purpose of a short text and the details that affect the reader. Look closely at restrictions, dates, exceptions and the difference between something proposed and something confirmed.
Articles and longer passages
Interpret ideas and viewpoints
Follow how an argument develops, distinguish facts from opinions and work out what the writer implies. An answer may use different words from the passage while keeping the same meaning.
How to practise TEF reading
A simple routine for your next practice session.
Step 1
Read with a question in mind
Understand what the question asks, then look for the relevant part of the passage. Check the surrounding sentence before deciding.
Step 2
Compare every option
Watch for answers that borrow words from the text but change who, when or why. Choose the option supported by the passage.
Step 3
Learn from the explanation
After checking your answer, locate the evidence yourself. Note whether the difficulty was vocabulary, an inference or an overlooked condition.

TEF reading: frequently asked questions
How many questions are in TEF Canada reading?
Compréhension écrite has 40 multiple-choice questions and lasts 60 minutes. You can move between questions during the reading test.
Is this a complete TEF reading mock test?
You can take fifteen separate reading mocks, each with 40 original questions and a 60-minute limit. The same questions are available individually for focused practice. Review your saved answers and explanations after finishing.
Can I turn my practice percentage into an NCLC score?
A small practice set cannot predict an official TEF or NCLC result. Use the score calculator to interpret an official TEF score report, rather than a percentage from these exercises.
How should I manage reading time?
Work through the questions you can answer, then return to the ones that need more thought. Practise noticing when rereading stops helping so you can keep time for the remaining passages.
