Section A: get information
Use a short advertisement as the starting point for a conversation. You take the initiative and ask for the details you need. Move beyond your prepared questions: an answer about the schedule might lead to a question about missing a session.
10 minutes
Section B: persuade a friend
Present a proposal and try to persuade a friend to take part. The examiner plays your friend and raises objections. Explain the benefits, listen carefully and adapt your reasoning to what they say.
How to practise TEF speaking
A simple routine for your next practice session.
Step 1
Choose a role-play
Start with Section A or B. Read the situation and decide what you need to achieve, rather than writing a speech to recite.
Step 2
Have the conversation
Allow your microphone and start a French conversation. In Section A, ask questions; in Section B, present your idea and respond to your partner’s concerns.
Step 3
Review and repeat
Review the saved conversation and feedback on your response. Identify where the exchange stopped flowing, save useful vocabulary and try again with more specific follow-up questions.

TEF speaking: frequently asked questions
What is the TEF Canada speaking test?
Expression orale is a 15-minute exchange with an examiner. Section A lasts 5 minutes and asks you to obtain information. Section B lasts 10 minutes and asks you to present an idea and persuade someone.
Can I practise TEF speaking for free?
Yes. A free account includes one five-minute Section A conversation about a photography workshop, with a transcript and AI feedback. No payment card is needed. Further conversations use speaking credits: Section A takes five minutes (1 credit), and Section B takes ten minutes (2 credits). Premium includes speaking time, or you can buy extra time separately.
Can I practise with an AI speaking partner?
Yes. Our live AI conversation partner listens and responds in French, with instant, accurate feedback after your conversation. Feedback is based on your saved interaction and gives practice estimates, not an official TEF result.
Should I memorise a speaking template?
Practise useful ways to ask, clarify and disagree, but leave room to respond naturally. A memorised speech cannot anticipate what the examiner says next.
