Section A: continue a news story
Continue the beginning of an article with a coherent account of what happened next. Keep the setting and people consistent. Link the events clearly and use verb tenses that make their order easy to follow.
35 minutes · At least 200 words
Section B: defend your opinion
Respond to a statement with your own position. Develop your reasons with specific examples and organise them into paragraphs. Your reader should understand both what you believe and why.
How to practise TEF writing
A simple routine for your next practice session.
Step 1
Plan your response
For a story, sketch the main events. For an opinion, choose your position and supporting reasons. Give each paragraph a clear job.
Step 2
Write against the clock
Write in the exam editor with a word counter and French-character keyboard. Your answers are saved to your account, and the timer keeps running if you leave the page.
Step 3
Revise the substance
Submit your response to review the task, organisation, arguments and language. AI feedback points to examples from your writing and suggests a focused next exercise.

TEF writing: frequently asked questions
How long is the TEF Canada writing test?
Expression écrite lasts 60 minutes: 25 minutes for Section A and 35 minutes for Section B. The tasks require at least 80 and 200 words respectively.
