Learn the idea

01

Understand the pattern

TEF Canada tests reading, listening, writing and speaking separately. For immigration, the exam contains 40 reading questions in 60 minutes, 40 listening questions in 40 minutes, two writing tasks in 60 minutes and two speaking tasks in 15 minutes. There is no separate grammar paper in TEF Canada. Grammar matters because it helps you understand and express meaning in every skill. NCLC and CEFR are different frameworks: a B2 label alone does not establish NCLC 7 in each skill.

02

See it in context

Read the French first. Identify the structure that carries the meaning, then use the explanation to check your interpretation.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Je comprends une annonce, mais je ne peux pas encore expliquer mon opinion.

“I understand an announcement, but I cannot yet explain my opinion.” A learner can have different strengths in each skill. Plan from the weaker skills as well as the stronger ones.

03

Make it useful

Choose your starting stage using actual tasks: introduce yourself, describe a past event, explain an opinion and understand an unfamiliar recording. The plan is a workload estimate, not a deadline for acquiring a level. Repeat a stage when its performance goals are still difficult. Use the score calculator for published TEF score conversions; do not convert a lesson quiz percentage into NCLC.
